What Is a Blog? Understanding Why People Love Starting Blogs

Updated: December 5, 2018

So you're here because you're asking the question what is a blog?

It's a good question to ask because blogs can be confusing.

Are they about cats?

Do people just take pictures of food?

Are they helpful?

The main problem with blogs is that they are many different things depending on who is doing the writing.

What Is a Blog?

At their most basic level, blogs are simply websites with pages called posts.

Each post is written and published by the blog system.

That's it.

From there the blog owner can make their blog anything they want. Some blogs are funny, some blogs are serious, some blogs are useless, and some are extremely valuable.

Pretty much like people.

In fact, what you're reading right now is a blog!

A better question to ask would be why should you start a blog?

Why You Should Start a Blog

You might be thinking that you have no interest in starting a blog because you don't like to write or you don't want to put your business out there.

I feel you.

I don't blog because I like the world to know more about me or because I love sitting down, starting at a blank screen, and then word vomiting on my keyboard.

I blog to make a living. It's the main reason I'm able to make over $10,000 a month doing stuff online.

Yep, I don't have to work for anyone else and I get to choose what I want to do when I want to do it all because of blogging.

I'll give you a couple of seconds to pick up the pieces of your brain that exploded out of your head.

Because blogging can seem like a silly hobby to some people it can be completely confusing as to how people can actually make money from it. However, the fact of the matter is that blogging is serious business.

Some bloggers make over $100,000 a month from blogging. That's how crazy blogging is and that is why I blog.

Sure I love helping people but blogging is probably one of the most relaxing ways to make money today.

I'm not trying to blow smoke up you ass either. If you're curious about how blogs make money then check out How to Make Money Blogging: A Beginner’s Guide to Working at Home.

How Blogging Works

So it might seem weird that normal people are able to start a blog and make money from it. Depending on how you grew up starting your own business might've been a pipe dream.

It certainly was for me.

But just because some blogs are filled with nonsense that doesn't mean all blogs are useless.

Blogging can be a serious business.

Here's why.

It's About Solving Problems

One of the basic rules of business is that to make money you need to provide some type of value to a person. Rarely do people knowingly open up their wallets to spend money on something that doesn't have value to them.

Yes, even those Beanie Babies hold value to some people.

The value that blogging can bring to an individual is usually through problem-solving. When you think about it, most of the time you spend money is because you are trying to solve a problem or prevent one from happening.

You didn't stop at Subway to buy a sandwich because it would be fun. You did it because you either had the problem of being hungry or were looking to prevent the problem of being hungry from occurring.

You're reading this blog post because you're trying to find a solution to the problem of what is a blog.

A lot of bloggers make money by teaching others how to start successful blogs. The problem isn't necessarily how to start a successful blog. The problem could be how do you quit your job and work from home?

When you can solve a big problem for someone they are likely to open up their wallets for the solution.

It's no different than any other business.

Reaching a Large Audience

Blogging gives you the opportunity to reach a large audience through what is known as content marketing.

Let's say you start a blog (good for you!) and it's about gardening.

Now, there are a lot of problems that need to be solved by beginning gardeners and they are going to be looking for solutions. Because you've been blogging for 6 months you have about 40 posts dedicated to gardening. Each post tackles a different problem and offers a wonderful solution.

Some people will be looking for a solution that will bring them to one post while others will be looking for another solution that brings them to another post.

Each post has a chance of bringing in new people and because posts usually stay up as long as the blog remains up that means you have a consistent chance of bringing people to your business.

Over the years you could very well reach millions of people.

what is a blog
Here is an analytics snapshot from my health and fitness blog for its first year of existence. As you can see it reached over 760,000 people!

Not many other types of businesses could reach that amount of people in a year.

With blogging, there is nothing special going on. I simply wrote posts that solved problems for people and I made sure I promoted those posts to the right audience.

People enjoyed the posts, shared it with others, and momentum continued to build.

You might be asking does the blog make money and the answer is yes. If you just take into account ad revenue then the blog does over $2,000 a month. That means I don't have to do anything else but bring traffic to the site.

Now the site also brings in money other ways but I just wanted to put a spotlight on one of the more passive ways of making money by blogging.

Blogging Offers Freedom

Because blogging allows you to work from anywhere you want it has become a very enticing way for people to make money.

Most of us just want some freedom in life to do what we want and there are a lot of different ways to accomplish that. Blogging just happens to be one of them.

So when you ask yourself what is blogging and why are so many people jumping on the bandwagon hopefully now you have a better idea of what is happening.

Blogging isn't some revolutionary business. It's just a great way to help out a lot of people simply by writing.

That in itself makes it all worth it.
