Here is a problem that many people have with the "niche down" concept that I don't think the niche down bloggers explain enough. Niching down works perfectly when you have a product that you want to sell because you can only sell a product to a specific audience. That's where the whole niche down thing comes into play. Niching down won't automatically get you more traffic or change the course of your blog. Niching down helps you focus your content around a specific topic which in turn can help you rank more for topic X because every post revolves around that, but that can be done with a multi-category blog as well
If your revenue strategy is ads then niching down too much completely takes that away because the traffic is no longer there There is also a mental aspect to niching down. Then you're only worried and focused on that one thing. Some people can do that with bigger blogs and some need to actually hone in one thing. I think a lot of people have a problem with understanding that niching down has to tie in with your monetization strategy.
A constant question that I get is that if someone should niche down more because they aren't getting the traffic they want. It usually goes like this (I got this email yesterday)
I'm only getting 100 pageviews a day and I've been doing this for 4 months, should I niche down more?
If we look at things critically then you can easily see that just deciding you are only going to focus on purple mice isn't going to change traffic but because now everything you write is around purple mice and all of those posts link into each other that means your chances of ranking for purple mice keywords increases.
Your pageviews go up because people are bouncing around all of your purple mice posts since they are related.
Taking a step back you can see that there is no reason why you can't do this on a blog that has broader topics. Don't start a lifestyle blog with 5 different topics and you only write 2 posts per topic. Write a lifestyle blog with 5 different topics and you do a crazy deep dive into each one.
